At first playing games like World of Warcraft seems like harmless fun. Unfortunately, for many, the games turn into an obsessive and addictive narcotic that causes the player to become consumed and infatuated to the point that they began to loose all self-control and concern for life in the real world. Gaming begins to control all aspects of their lives. They decide that school doesn't matter, they call in sick for their job, they don't spend time with their family and they start to "spread out" in their gaming chair. They blow off important things because they have a "raid" scheduled. Eating and sleeping become inconvenient necessities that are taken care of only when gaming allows! The game becomes their life and they begin living a false reality where they can be anything, do anything, be stronger, and have a much improved social status.

My older brothers play. One is 21 and the other is 24. All my 21 year old brother does is play. No joke. He has no job, he quit college, and he stays in his room all day. All he does is eat, sleep, and play. Almost everyday I hear him at three o'clock in the morning playing. I've come to the conclusion that he is obsessed with the game and how successful it makes him feelI also think that he knows it. Now I will admit that the World of Warcraft game is fun. I've played it but I soon found that like most games, it started to take up all of my time. In conclusion, I think that at first games are just fun to play. When it becomes a problem is when the player starts to loose themselves into the game. At that point, they are no longer players, they are hostages to the addiction. The next phase of the transformation is when they become so immersed in their character that they find more satisfaction in what they accomplish on line then what they contribute in real life. That is why I worry about my brother and feel like I am losing the battle for his life.
