Who are we to say that marriage should be a 'sacred' institution between only a man and a woman? Just as America was formed and the precepts were to be free from religious persecution, so too should All Americans be free from reforms on the sanctity of marriage.
Proponents of reform of gay marriage suggest it as a Christian (sacred) union between a man and a woman. If marriage were only a Christian arena, there would be a case. Humans from all walks of life join in love and matrimony, whether arranged or voluntary, under their perceived God and build families based on that love. People from all walks of life have the abilities to adopt or find suitable ways to procreate as well, so too should the gay population.
Common sense suggests that if two people are intent on marrying, the only prerequisite be they love each other and are willing to make it work. We are all too quick to get divorced these days. Why all of a sudden should we consider it so important that gay people can't have a union 40% of straight people give up on? Will gays and lesbians' odds be that much better because they had to fight for it?
I believe gays and lesbians (whether it's a preference or a part of themselves they were actually born with) should have the freedom from persecution of their ideals, beliefs and practices, within whatever the religion they choose. Within that statement I think I found the perfect argument that gays SHOULD be able to marry-it's in our constitution!
If the argument ever is that people are taking advantage of the system and receiving free health care or work benefits, more power to them! I can count on my hand how many straight people married their friends (sometimes even gay friends) in our military just to get the eleven hundred dollar or so tax benefit. I know other cases of civilians who earn more in tax returns, just because they married. So if it's about this argument, keeping gays and lesbians from marrying each other isn't going to stop fraud. It'll just stop our progress as keeping blacks from voting did.
The final and most ridiculous argument against gay marriage I want to dispute is the topic of ability for gays and lesbians to sufficiently mother/father their children. I am friends with many many people of the opposite-sex preference, and I can honestly never re-call a gay or lesbian who never had the ability to love. In fact, people of this persuasion are so tenacious in their ability to find the right kind of love for them, that they fight society and low ratios of their kind just to find their perfect someone. I believe these are the right candidates to be parents for that specific reason; their quest for love is strong, and they should be entitled to their lives, their freedoms, and their pursuits of happiness just like the rest of us.
