Anime reviews: Outlaw Star

"Outlaw Star" is a series from the creators of "Cowboy Bebop." However, Outlaw Star isn't that much grounded in reality unlike Cowboy Bebop. Instead of "Cowboys," there are "Outlaws." The series itself looks to be strongly influenced by Chinese culture as is Cowboy Bebop. But, Outlaw Star is more futuristic and focuses more on the aspect of science-fiction. The story focuses on the crew of the Outlaw Star. The Outlaw Star is an experimental grappler ship called the XGP15A-II which is an advanced prototype.

The Outlaw Star is equipped with two arms on the side for grappler combat. Grappler combat is an interesting aspect; as it means two ships are going at it against each other in hand to hand combat.

The main characters of Outlaw Star are Gene Starwind, Jim Hawking, Melfina, "Twilight" Suzuka, and Aisha Clan-Clan. The three of them tend to do jobs working as a small business called "Starwind & Hawking" which is a jack-of-all-trades business that covers escorting, salvaging, exploring, transporting, and guarding. In the beginning, it's just Gene and Jim. Slowly, the crew increases with these three members.

Gene Starwind is the captain of the ship. He's very much a slacker and self-proclaimed ladies man. In combat, Gene is well armed with all sorts of weapons. He sports a Caster gun that fires magic rounds that are effective against Tao priests and other supernatural beings.

Jim Hawking is Gene's partner and sidekick. He tends to be the most serious of the group despite his age. Jim is skilled in computers and mechanics. He handles the group's finances and plans.

Melfina is one of the main focuses in the series. She is a bio-android that is the navigator of the Outlaw Star. Melfina and the Outlaw Star were stolen from the Kei pirates by Hot Ice Hilda. She is the key towards fighting the Galactic Leyline.

Aisha Clanclan is the only non-human of the group. She is part of a warrior race that can transform into beasts called the Ctarl-Ctarl. Aisha is an officer for the Empire. As punishment, she has to look for clues about the Galactic Leyline. Because of that, Aisha joins the clue.

Suzuka is a female assassin that kills when the sun is setting. She uses a wooden bokken that is capable of cutting through metal. She joins to crew to go after the person that killed her family.

Regardless of their reasons, they're all drawn towards finding the Galactic Leyline. Nobody knows what the Galactic Leyline really is. One can say it's a treasure or some great power. Regardless, it's more than enough to cause people to try and find it.

Outlaw Star has an interesting premise as the group takes on jobs to get the necessary funding to find the Galactic Leyline. It's a great anime series to watch.
