PUNCTUALITY GARNERS RESPECT
Punctuality gains respect in almost any place but it is essential in the workplace. Being on time says a lot about you and how you feel about your company and your colleagues. Understanding the importance of punctuality can go a long way in helping you increase your value to your company and climb the career ladder.
Why is punctuality so important in the workplace?
When you accept a job with a company, you accept responsibility for the work you do and you agree to adhere to the policies and procedures prescribed by the company. You assume accountability for your performance and your actions. Being punctual gives the positive perception that you are serious about your work and you respect your employer.
Your employer pays you for the time you work. It's important that you respect the financial compensation and trust that have been awarded to you whether you're paid hourly or salaried doesn't matter. You still have an obligation to the company and that requires you to be on time.
When you are late for arrival, meetings or appointments, it shows a lack of respect for the other individuals involved. They will see this as a lack of planning or poor time management on your part. It reflects poorly on other parts of your job and inhibits your future advancement opportunities. Employees who are not able to manage their time and handle their schedule can create problems for the rest of the team, in addition to garnering negative personal attention.
Customers expect businesses to have services accessible and available when they say they will be available. If you have a job providing services directly to the public, you jeopardize the customer service expectations and customer retention by being late. When you are late, it causes someone else to have to pick up your part of the job and take on added responsibility due to your negligence or lack of respect for them. It can cause frustration and anxiety among co-workers and reflects poorly on your performance.
Being punctual is a sign of respect for others. It lets them know that you take your job seriously and that you respect their time as well. When you are punctual, others learn to rely on you more heavily. As you gain more respect and your management puts increased confidence and dependence in your abilities, you increase your value to the organization. Valued employees are most likely to benefit from promotional opportunities and broadened job responsibilities.
The next time you think about sleeping in just a few more minutes, consider the consequences to you, your colleagues, and your company. It's really not worth the negativity it creates. Enhance your value to your company and make punctuality a priority in your life!
