Apathy and gender equality

There are many causes to fight for and so many organizations that are looking for worthy volunteers. The truth is there are just not enough people, who care anymore to carry the banner, fight the good fight and do things just because it's the right thing to do. Somewhere is the middle of all this muddle gender equality has become less and less important.

Maybe there really are bigger battles that are more important. Perhaps some believe the fight had progressed as far as it need to in our society. Maybe as a nation we are just tired.

My personal observation is that many successful women have not been champions of the cause. (I feel the mean stares and angry emails coming even as I write this.) Let me share with you a few of my experiences. While in the banking business my supervisor told me that as long as human life meant more to me than business I wouldn't make it in banking. I said she was right and walked out the door. She is a very powerful woman executive, but certainly not the kind of role model I want for gender equality.

A high powered and world famous attorney came to our small community to defend an old woman that didn't keep up her yard. The only thing any of us really remember is this high powered attorney couldn't get the name of the women or the town correct. It didn't matter much that she was a woman.

Then again, maybe I don't want gender equality. Maybe I want equal pay for the same job, but I am sure there can or should be total gender equality. Are we truly equal? Are we suppose to be the same in the big scheme of things, or are the differences important? I am not so sure as I used to be.

Perhaps we are more apathetic towards this issue. It may be a good thing. Perhaps we can throw our passion to other causes that we feel more worthy and important. In general it is easy for society to become apathetic about anything. We live in a disposable society where every thing and ever one can be replaced.

I not really sure anyone can prove me wrong then again maybe they can't prove me right. Is this where apathy begins?
