The dangers of self-publishing for writers seeking mainstream success

While what the writer says may be true of hard book publishing, it certainly isn't true of self-published e-books authors. I've written and sell several e-books, the first published in 1998 and have sold many more than 5,000 during that time and sell copies 24/7 automatically from my sites and through partners.

The benefits of self-publishing ebooks include that it is cheap, you can do it all yourself (no being messed about by a publisher) and there is a huge market of people who don't want to wait a week or two for their book to arrive from Amazon or some other direct order bookstore.

While my ebooks are "how to" titles, there is also a demand for novels, short stories and other genres.

The distinct advantage for buyers of ebooks is that in most cases (and in all cases for my ebooks), they can print the ebook on standard sized paper and read it as a hard copy if they so wish. Thus, they get the best of both worlds ... quick delivery and ability to print if they wish.

Although I don't charge large sums for my ebooks, many authors are charging $47 - $97 USD for ebooks about ordinary titles, much more than one would receive for a hard copy book.

Even if you are a hard copy book author and manage to self-publish, it's an excellent business strategy to make the title available as an ebook as well, thus widening one's customer net.

Not getting published by a big name book publisher doesn't need to signal the end of the road. One of the largest ebook sellers (now deceased), Cory Rudle tried to get a book about how to choose a second-hand car published and when he failed, self-published in ebook format. He became an overnight success worth millions.
