Comparing homemade tomato sauce and store bought sauce

If I had to compare homemade tomato sauce to store bought sauce, I'd have to say that there are several brands that are very good. Some of the jarred sauces are really tasty and I must admit I've used them in a pinch. Some refrigerated brands are almost as good as homemade, but actual homemade sauce is still the best.

When we talk about homemade tomato sauce there are different methods to making them. Not many people have the time nor inclination to make TRUE homemade sauce. This, of course, involves chopping fresh tomatoes after they've been peeled. First you need to boil water and blanch the tomatoes so the skin will come off easily. You also have to have all fresh herbs, onions, garlic. These need to be sauteed in olive oil before they are added to the tomatoes. And you will also need various additions such as meat or other vegetables, depending on what you are making the sauce for. It is important to simmer the sauce for hours so all the flavors will blend together. Most of us don't have that kind of time.

I usually make my sauce with a few shortcuts. It is still homemade but doesn't take as long. Instead of blanching and chopping fresh tomatoes, I use good quality canned tomatoes. I then add chopped fresh herbs, garlic and onion that I saute in olive oil. After seasoning to taste, I allow this to simmer several hours. Usually I use a slow cooker, this way the sauce can simmer all day and be ready when I finish work. The aroma greets you when you walk in. I make enough for at least two meals at once in order to save time and money in the future. I add in cheese, meat or seafood when I reheat the frozen sauce and serve it with pasta or rice.

Now, take into account the fresh, nutritious ingredients, the personalized seasonings you control and the compliments you will get. Think of the rich aromas that will permeate your home. Add that to the monetary savings, since most store bought sauces are very pricey and I'd have to say that when comparing homemade tomato sauce to store bought sauce, there is no comparison.
