My dad pulled in the driveway and I ran out on the porch to see what he got. He had just brought home my first car. He pulled way down beside the house and I couldn't see the entire car. I did see that it was a four door and it was maroon. "It's a four door, but I love it!" I exclaimed as I was running to see what it was.
A 1987 Grand Am, maroon, 4 door. I was on top of the world. I was 16, and had just gotten my first part-time job. Mom and dad were tired of me using their car and agreed to buy one for me on the condition that I paid for it. I was making $3.30 an hour at a grocery store and my payments were $125.00 a month. I could swing it!
That car took me too school, drove friends to and from destinations, and I was queen of the road! This same car was the car my husband and I drove to the drive-in theater while we were dating. It was also the same car that we drove on our honeymoon. Complete with soap drawn hearts and coffee cans tied to the bumper.
A few years and a lot of miles later, I came home to find my car had been stolen. The thief completely totaled. It was time to bid farewell to the junk heap that had been so faithful to me all these years and move on to a shiny new Chrysler Lebaron.
I miss that car.
