Movie reviews: The Brave One

& Breakfast on Pluto).

Such improbability, however, can be completely forgiven when you witness the mesmerizing performance of Foster who is compelling to watch here, her raw; honest and heartfelt portrayal of the vulnerable & increasingly volatile Erica Baines taps into the visceral; instinct within us all for revenge when pushed to the edge. This is not to say that it is right but is wholly understandable given her circumstances! And her transformation from happy-go-lucky; in love and easy going radio presenter to cold; calculating; hollow vigilante is a deliberate & gradual process but brilliant and brutal in its execution. Terence Howard (Crash and Hustle & Flow) offers solid and steady support as the smart; sympathetic and world-weary detective who is inexplicably drawn to her in spite of a growing awareness surrounding her violent midnight excursions.

The Brave One is not a typical revenge movie in the vein of Charles Bronson's Death Wish series and the many other such films of its genre and era which is a courageous move in itself! Neither does it glorify the violence committed but rather, takes a look at the source of the violence; what motivated her and how she reacts to this complete stranger that evolves in the process, leaving us to make up our own minds about the rights and wrongs of the movie.
