Minimum wage was never fair, is not fair now and probably never will be fair for several reasons:
1. You can't get ANY housing on that kind of money. For folks who haven't received an inheritance by the time they get their first job and whose parents aren't keen on having them stay much longer, this is cruelty.
2. A LOT of employers that use the minimum wage, won't let the employees work any kind of hours close to full time because they don't want to risk the chance of paying overtime. Not only is their pay rate low, they can't get enough hours from one job to get the money need from one job.
3. Prices are way too high and have been since the inception of the minimum wage. It's crazy.
4. Until workers can take their minimum wage paychecks, completely pay for unassisted housing, utilities, food and other necessities, these jobs are strictly for people who don't have to pay all of the bills themselves, have a nice setup living with someone else (who might not charge them a lot or at all) or if they have someone that likes to buy their meals for them. They're good for young kids, whose parents support them. But grown adults forced to work for the minimum wage and care for all their own needs would probably have to work more than one job. When a person has to work more than one job, quality of life issues become a major factor.
5. These are the people whose didn't quality for a tax cut under George W. Bush's tax incentives because their income was less than $25,000. THEY ACTUALLY DIDN'T EARN ENOUGH MONEY TO GET A TAX CUT. Makes you want to yell at somebody. The ultrarich people's tax cuts were EQUAL to much more than that $25,000 level many, many times.
It's all so unfair it reeks.
