The FDA should require manufactures to reveal foods that are genetically modified. People have a right to know what food products that they are eating. The FDA requires labeling on many items. It only makes sense that they require labeling on genetically modified foods as well. Genetically modified foods are a controversial issue. Some people are concerned that these foods are harmful to the environment and people. It is not clear what the long term effects of these foods are. If there is any question as to the safety of these foods, then the FDA has a responsibility to make sure these foods are labeled. With so many people against them, it is important that these foods be labeled, so that consumers can know what they are buying.

If a person does not mind eating genetically modified foods, then they will have no problem consuming a food that is labeled so. More importantly, if a person is against genetically modified foods, labeling will enable them to identify those foods so that they can avoid purchasing and consuming them.

Dozens of countries have banned genetically modified foods due to concerns of safety. Proponents for genetically modified foods feel that they are an answer to world hunger. Foods can be modified to grow in poor soil conditions and be resistant to pests, among other things that ensure larger crops. As good as larger crop yields sound, we just don't know what the long term effects are going to be and we can not gaurantee current safety of these foods. Already, we have had reported problems with genetically modified foods. In 1989, dozens of Americans died after consuming genetically modified supplements. Severe alergic reactions have been reported in people after consuming genetically modified foods. Genetically modified foods often have lower nutritional value, release toxins into the soil, the finished product contain toxins, and they endanger and kill wildlife. This is just a small list of problems with genetically modified foods. Searching on the internet, will bring a wealth of information on the dangers of these foods. What is listed here alone is enough to warrant labeling on these foods.

Bottom line: WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT WE ARE BUYING!
