Free public transport? That is an oxymoron if ever there was one. If the user does not pay, where will the funding come from if not from Government Tax Revenue? We the people will have to pay for this free' service somehow.

The cost of trains, trams, buses, and boats whether purchased or leased by the government is expensive, even before adding to this the running costs of fuel, maintenance and staff salaries. Transport infrastructure is constantly in need of expansion and improvement as the number of private vehicles on our roads increases.

For the general public who own a car these days hefty taxes are levied mostly through fuel excises and tolls to cover the cost of upkeep on the old and the building of new super highways, tunnels and bridges to help reduce travel time and alleviate the growing inner city congestion. For car owners it's a user pay principal.

The same should apply to the public' transport network around the world. Offering a single and comprehensive transport passenger card for all the cities various public transport options whether they be bus, train, ferry, trams would offer commuters a more enticing and affordable user pay public' transport option.

The only concession could be to students and senior citizens with suitably low fees or free of charge so as not to disadvantage those on little or no incomes.
