So there I was in Guam. The year was 1996 and I was an enlisted man living in the dormitory. We just had a new Airman get assigned to the base and she moved in down the hall from me. Her name was Kelly and I was smitten. I'm decent looking but I've never been too smooth with the ladies. Good looking women simply made me nervous and this girl was so far out of my league we might has well been different species.
As soon as her plane landed and she stepped off, the guys were all over her. Each one trying to out-stud the other in an attempt to get her attention. The first guy to get in good with her would probably stay that way until one of them got orders or they made a firm commitment. Since Kelly was given a room down the hall from me, I could move a little slower, I figured. We'd be neighbors and I'd see her more than most of the guys which is good because I was pretty pokey when it came to making a move.
About a month later, I managed to get on a first name basis with her and we seemed to get along fine. I don't know how because I wanted to throw up every time she came by. I have no idea why a woman like that would bother talking to a goober like me, but she did. I finally got the courage to ask her out on a date and she said yes! Oh boy! If I could that first date in the bag, I was home free.
I had some ideas that had always worked in the past. Nothing endears you to a girl better than a day date. I'd ask them to go shopping or to an amusement park. It always worked because it was fun and different. We'd walk around together for a few hours and crack jokes and have fun. It was a great way to get to know each other. Then that would naturally roll into getting something to eat. Over dinner we'd talk about how much fun we had and next would be a movie or out to a nightclub. If we made it as far as the dinner, then that means everything worked and she liked me. I was in her heart!
Well, she backed out of the whole day thing because some other guy beat me to the punch that day. She did agree to the standard dinner and a movie the next night, though. This was going to severely hurt my chances, plus now she had some other fella to think about. I was committed to this and I was going to do my best to outshine my competitor. So what if my sure fire date was down the tubes? I could still win her even though she was getting hit on by every stud on the island!
I got myself all cleaned up. I even washed my car. 7:00 pm...date time! I practically bounced down the hall, firmly
