quietly, staring at the floor.
Luke frowned. "What do you mean?"
"We were together all through high school and after graduation we got married," Randy said still staring at the floor. "I loved her so much, so much but she died. All my fault. I've lived all these years with the guilt. That's why I don't want you getting so serious so young. When something happens, you'll be too young to handle it ."
Luke stared unblinkingly at him and quietly asked, "You had another wife? How did she die?"
Randy raised his tearful eyes to Luke. "She...there were complications after she had the baby and... she was gone. "
Luke stared incredulously. He never saw him cry, not once in all his life. "A baby? Where is he? What happened to him? Did he die, too?" he asked anxiously.
Randy wished he could fall through the floor. "The baby was you, Luke."
Luke backed up two steps before whispering, "You're lying. Mom's my mom. Why are you saying this?"
"Luke, Feather isn't your real mom but she's love you just like she is. She's loved you from the moment she saw you," he spoke earnestly, "I told you how I met her but what I didn't tell you is that I was afraid of falling in love again so soon after Sophie died. I fought it with all my might and when that didn't work I figured I'd scare her away with you. Who wants a guy that already has a kid, right? Well, that didn't work either. The moment you saw her it was as if you'd known her all your life. You held on to her like you'd never let go. You called her mama. It was your first word. She thought you were the sweetest baby and you were. She cried holding you and I knew I was lost. We married three weeks later and moved here."
Tears were slipping down Luke's face unbidden. "I wasn't even born in Port Orianco? Is there nothing you didn't lie about?" he asked quietly.
"Luke, I didn't know how to tell you and it got harder instead of easier as you got older and Feather didn't want you to hate her."
"What's her name?" Luke growled angrily, "What's my mother's full name?"
"Sophia Calgary."
"Calgary? As in Jack Calgary?"Luke asked suspiciously. "I thought he was your friend from school."
"He was Sophia's step-brother, her only remaining relative," Randy said bracingly.
Luke felt sick. He turned from his father and started walking away.
"Luke, where are you going?" Randy asked anxiously.
"Home," Luke replied, "Unless you lied about that too."
