Running as a form of exercise or sport is one of the more natural body movements that humans are blessed with. Every bodies running style is different yet probably similar. The first thing that you need to do is teach the trainee how to breather correctly. This is an under rated technique that usually gets over looked and if done incorrectly will only delay the progression in becoming a better runner. Another good idea to put in the little runners head would be how to pace yourself. For example if on the last lap of the mile the trainee has slowed up considerably and is exhausted, maybe they are exerting themselves too much in the beginning laps not saving enough energy for the final sprint.
A big staple in the running game is pace. Along with pace, the runners need to know their limits. Starting out strong and fast isn't for everybody and if you are not breathing right you will tire yourself out faster than you can run possibly even getting sick or passing out. So I would say that breathing and setting the runner at their best pace would be the first lessons any running couch will give his or her students. After the coach has achieved this he will most likely demonstrate a running style that optimizes the students performance. This has to do with correct arm pumps leg motions and hands. The whole point here is to minimize the runners drag helping them float through the competition and actually succeed becoming healthier and faster.
Proper running sneakers, clothes and equipment are also a necessity. Track spikes help and if a trainee is running in penny loafers there could be a problem. Weather also plays a key factor in training. If it is damp and raining outside wearing too much can over heat the runner. Not wearing enough will make the runner sick delaying their chances for getting any better or making progress forward. In the rain I suggest a t-shirt and shell jacket remaining light and waterproof. Only wear pants if it is too cold outside to otherwise do so. Once an article of clothing becomes wet it becomes heavy. Cold and wet only increase your chances of becoming sick.
The only way to get better at any sport including running is to practice. You can know all the tricks of the trade but if you don't assert yourself or your trainee to excel then it is simple, they will not. Many people run on a daily basis and have conditioned their bodies to perform that role. If you are trying to compete or become an improved runner than no less than three times a week would be appropriate. Remember to wait an hour after eating and run with people who are serious about it. Competition drives humans and there is no reason why you won't get better if you really try.
