Guide to Kissimmee's natural attractions

by David R. Chase

Created on: October 15, 2007

Nature lovers from around the globe flock to Kissimmee, Florida, to enjoy spectacular stretches of sand and sky, lush tropical wetlands, and several species of carefully protected wildlife. Much of the Central Everglades' organic beauty has been preserved through state foundations in order to provide visitors with a truly down-to-earth experience.

The Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park (www.FloridaStateParks.org) is home to over eighty-five species of butterflies and several endangered birds and plants. The park also boasts over a hundred miles of unpaved roads and offers visitors the chance to bicycle, hike, or horseback ride through protected wetlands and prairies. Seasonal buggy tours are available by reservation. Guests who wish to stay overnight find the full-facility campground ideal for relaxing, exploring, and stargazing.

Bird watching, a very popular Floridian pastime, can be best enjoyed at the Lake Lizzie Nature Preserve (www.FloridaKiss.com). Lake Lizzie is home to soaring eagles, hawks, osprey, and many other avian wonders. Scenic walking, hiking, and equestrian trails meander through the 986-acre preserve, presenting visitors with an exquisite peek into Florida's undisturbed natural beauty.

Freshwater fishing aficionados will enjoy the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, where trophy-sized largemouth bass aren't just a "fish story." The Alligator Chain of Lakes, East Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho, to the locals), and Lake Trout are just a few of the many popular trawling spots. Visitors have the option of boating on their own or hiring a trained guide. The Kissimmee Convention and Visitors Bureau (www.FloridaKiss.com) catalogs several options for fishing guides and charters and lists several local hot spots for fishing adventure.

The Boggy Creek Airboat (www.BCAirboats.com) brings vacationers up close and personal with several wetland species - including Florida's famed alligators. Turtles, exotic birds, and large freshwater fish fill the wetlands and can be seen on every waterway tour. Airboats are piloted by certified U.S. Coast Guard captains and may reach speeds of 45 miles per hour; tours are available for all ages and are handicap accessible.

The Florida Everglades National Park system (www.nps.gov/ever) offers the most current information on seasonal climate changes, historical highlights, fee charts, and reservation options for visitors to Kissimmee and the Central Everglades.

From state parks to local fishing holes, nature enthusiasts find Kissimmee's extensive dedication to the preservation of wildlife and wetlands a unique, refreshing experience.
