It is done.
Goodbye' I say, with a heavy heart,
He stares determinedly at his feet.
His sorrow breaks my heart to see
As with mine, his eyes meet.
His eyes search mine in desperation
He's hoping for some sign.
Hoping that I'll change my mind,
He slips his hand in mine.
I almost let my resolve cave
As I see the pain etched on his face.
Now it's my turn to look downwards
Pull my eyes away from his.
The time of our us' is over
Time I left what we had built
I couldn't stay when love had fled
Despite his pleading and my guilt.
My hand he holds so tight in his
His last link to my heart.
Gently I take my hand away.
Now we stand alone, apart.
This is how it has to be, I'm sorry
Our love didn't stand time's test
Forever was too long for me
Push aside the pain, lay us' to rest.
You brush my cheek, a touch so gentle
Stoke the embers left of the fire, once strong.
That fire is dead, the embers cold now
You think my lust will reawaken. You're wrong.
The promises that, once, I made you
That we were for all eternity
Did you not sense, even then
My words were laden with uncertainty?
I feel the tears well in my eyes
To match those which fall from yours
I turn and slowly walk away
Away to explore new shores.
It's not the end, it's the beginning
This pain that's tearing you in two
Will soon fade and be forgotten
Your heart repaired, for someone new.
It is done.
