Collegiate athletes should not receive payment when they compete in college athletics. If they did receive pay for their play the purity of the game would be spoiled. An athletic scholarship pays for an education. That is a great gift! Non-athletes have to find other ways to earn their degrees including scrimping and saving and doing without.
Walter Camp is considered by many to be the Father of football in America. He helped set up rules and regulations for this growing sport at a time when football was about to be banned. He believed that anyone involved in collegiate sporting events should should not be paid, even the referees. He thought that merely playing the game was an honor and that money would lead to corruptness, gambling and cheating.
Do we want our college sports to resemble the wreck that is the NFL, Or the NBA? (for example) Collegiate sports has always been seen as superb athletes competing with nothing more than their God-given talents and the thrill of victory to motivate them. In this instance it may be true that money is the root of all evil.
This all leads to some tough questions such as; How much would they get paid.? would they still have a free ride through college if they get paid? Does one sport deserve more pay than others? Who, how, and why are the main questions.

Why does anyone believe we need to start paying our non-professional athletes?
