Walk and talk: How going for walks together can improve your relationship

Nature provides a serenity that words can not describe. It is a beautiful encounter that is best shared with the one you love. There are many benefits a couple can reap from taking a stroll together.

There is just something invigorating about being outdoors with the wind blowing through your hair. The sun feels so good on your body. The sky seems so blue. The one you love is beside you. Life seems perfect.

Walking is healthy. It is a great way to get in some much needed exercise and isn't a hard activity. All you have to do is move your feet. A couple can benefit more from walking together than they can from sitting on the couch watching reality television and eating junk food.

The atmosphere is so relaxing when you are outdoors. It feels so open. There are no boundaries. You can walk as much or as little as you want. Unless it is posted otherwise, you can even go where you want. Map out new routes. Explore areas that you haven't been to before. Discover new places together. This is a wonderful way to add adventure to your relationship.

You are alone, yet you are surrounded by many other living organisms. This is a mystery within itself. Together you can discover new things. Research animals that you see. Collect rocks, leaves, and other natural materials for scrapbooks and art projects you can complete together.

Communication can be a fun thing. Take this time to learn new information. Ask each other questions and listen to the answers. Don't get mad if your partner doesn't say what you want them to. The right answers are often the honest ones. Write poems or songs together as you walk. Sometimes, it is fun to try to rhyme lines and words to see what happens. This is an awesome icebreaker, too.

The more a couple talks to each other, the easier it gets. Conversation shouldn't get awkward in a relationship but it often does. Talk about simple things and work your way up. Discuss your day, your hobbies, or your dreams. Confide in your partner and listen as they do the same with you.

Set aside time to walk together as often as you can. You may have a hectic schedule that won't allow you to do it every night but a little time outside in the breeze is better than none at all. Keep track of your thoughts, where you went, or fun things you discovered in a walking journal. Work on a book together. This is a fun way to preserve memories.

Above all else, have fun. Relax and enjoy the outdoors. Many couples don't need to say anything at all and still walk away feeling refreshed. Be glad for the time together and make the best of it. Let nature embrace you and bring you closer together.
