Human beings are strange creatures. In our everyday lives, we crave stability, structure, and a sense of normalcy. It is the glue that holds us together.
But we do have a need to make sure we fit those criteria. We need to feel that adrenaline rush that happens when our structure and stability is ripped out from under us. It helps keep us sane. Of course, that is practically impossible, and has the potential for some terrible consequences.
I think we have all at some time had the impulse to explore taboos and that inner urge to cross the lines of normality into insanity. All of us want to do something that is completely against our natures. We just don't want to loose that sense of stability that is so necessary for our well-being.
Horror movies give us the chance to do that. Instead of going out and getting a high from actually being chased by an axe murderer (something that would involve a lot of hassle, since it would require inquiries into where to find one!), we are able to live vicariously through the movies. It gives us that outlet.
I read an article by Steven King in high school. He argued that people are all a little insane, but we deal with it in different ways. According to Mr. King, we find ways to let the insanity out, whether it be talking to ourselves or traveling that tricky path to axe-murderer status. He prefers to write horror novels.
Judging from the box office, many among us prefer to watch horror movies. Controlled insanity is a good thing.
