Comparing the two versions of "Dawn of the Dead" is like comparing apples and tomatoes. They are both red on the outside, you can like them both, but they taste very different. As a result, both movies are very different and both have their place in a horror DVD collection.
The 1978 version of the movie was a spinoff of the movie "Night of the Living Dead." As a result, it follows the rules that apply from the first movie: the zombies move slowly, and is more of a social satire, showing that the zombies are us and we are the zombies; in the end some of the humans are viler. I also find that this version is less believable, because of the lack of special effects and the fact that it copied a 1978 environment. In addition, as a viewer, I would have liked more information as to what caused the epidemic; while the characters should be left in the dark, I felt that I needed more information. In order to make an assumption as to what happened; you must have seen "Night of the Living Dead." The last issue is its "B" style movie feel, which tends to draw the viewer away from the story.
The 2004 version has many aspects that I enjoy. It follows a whole new set of rules, zombies move faster and with more intent. However, this movie falters when it comes to the social commentary, heading in the direction of a horror/action movie. It is more believable than 1978 predecessor, having aspects that we see and feel every day. This movie also has a Hollywood feel and is considered an "A" grade production. The one aspect I like about this movie is that the viewer is given a clue as to what has happened, and it appears that terrorist may be to blame for the incident. This gives the viewers something to relate to, making the film more believable.
Over all, I like both films. I own and have watched both within the last six months. I feel that both movies have equal value in some regards, however, it is easier for a viewer to relate to the 2004 Dawn of the Dead, giving a slight lead over the 1978 version.
Note: Be sure to pay close attention to the 2004 version. Some of the side characters are actors from the 1978 version.
