Dawn of the Dead, one of my favorite movies of all times. As a teenager, I loved the original one that was made by George Romero back during the 1970's. In my own personal opinion Mr. Romero is a genius when it comes to making horror movies. His movie before that was Night of the Living Dead. To be honest that movie scared the mess out of me, and that movie was the start of the whole "Zombie" era. Dawn of the Dead came after Night of the living Dead, as if it seemed like it was actually the next day and the Zombies were still slowly creeping around.
When the remake of Dawn of the Dead came out, I knew I had to see it. I don't know about you, but the make-up and special affects make a good movie to me. Yes, both movies tend to resemble one another but with different twists. The first movie was about a swat team fighting off the flesh eaters and find refuge in a shopping mall. They only went there to supply up, but ended up staying longer than anticipated. In the remake, actual survivors of the rampage of zombies find their way to the mall to try to survive.
Sure, you did have a Police Officer in the remake, that also happened to be a Marine. He was strong and knew what to do in a combat situation. As we all know, he survived and was one of the 4 that got on the boat at the dock to get away from the trailing monsters.
In the first movie, you have the guys on the swat team and some others they met along the way. In the remake, you have a different type of crowd, You had the war Hero, the nurse, the stuck up snob, the player, the thug, the foreigner, the shy guy, the good kid, the guy who was hell bent on surviving no matter what, and the dumb girl. Every type of person covered there, no problem. You had a unique blend of individuals that tried to work together to survive.
The grotesque and blood gore in both movies were enough to make me squirm in my seat or throw a blanket over my eyes during particular scenes. To be honest, IT'S GREAT, to be scared like that. Like I said, that is what makes a good horror movie to me and that is if the movie can actually scare me.
I am not usually fans of remakes, but in this case, I have no complaint about either. Both scared me, both has similar plots and both had lots of gore. I give them both two thumbs up and I know that when ever I have the chance, especially around Halloween I will watch both of them over and over again.
