Are Iranians going over the border into Iraq to kill Americans? Of course they are, for the last thirty years they have called America "The Great Satan." But are these people Iranian government directed? I doubt it.
Iran is the huge winner of our war with Iraq, and there is evidence that Challabi, the guy who convinced the neo-cons and Bush that we should go in because the Iraqis would welcome us with flowers and easy women, is an Iranian agent. Iran hated Saddam, remember the Iran-Iraq war? His military was the only regional threat to them outside of Israel, and his regime and Saudi Arabia were the only other contenders for regional leadership. He also lead a government of Sunnis that exploited the Shia majority of Iraq, and Iran is Shia. Iran must have been ecstatic to see us invade and depose Saddam and the Baath.
Even better for Iran is that the Iraqi government is now a puppet of theirs. The two major parties that now make up the Iraqi government had their headquarters in Tehran before we invaded.
Ask yourself this question; if American troops are dying to support a Shia government closely allied with Shia Iran, is the Iranian government really going to try to stop them? Pretty unlikely even given that they do hate our guts.
Who, beyond the Iraqis, is trying to kill us in Iraq? Lots of people from all over, but half of the foreign fighter and half of the suicide bombers are from Saudi Arabia. Remember them? Where most of the 9/11 terrorists came from...and the country that paid for the madrassah fundamentalist schools in Pakistan where the Taliban came from...and who are Sunni. Saudi Arabia hates Iran and the Shia and, seeing as the Iraqi government is now Shia and allied or controlled by Iran, they are highly motivated to get rid of it.
I realize I am writing on the no side here, but let me conclude slightly on the yes side anyway. Iran has not committed an act of war against us, so I chose no. But they have already caught our spies in their country trying to make war on them, and we have already started trying to get minority groups in Iran to revolt, so we are already at war with Iran, even if it is unprovoked. Never mind that war with Iran right now might get our military in Iraq wiped out and that we are more in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (where we promised, 44 years ago, to get rid of all of our nuclear weapons) than they are.
Iran has an intact military of 800,000 men. Iran has the ability, built over decades, to close the Straights of Hormuz, cutting off our troops from supplies on that side. Turkey is considering right now whether to cut off our other supply route, through their country. The men we have trained in Iraq will side with Iran. Iran has Hezbollah and Hamas to call on as well, and Hezbollah has done some serious damage to Israeli forces which are at least as good as our own. We have not been having an easy time against the insurgents in Iraq. Add about one million men to what the insurgents have, subtracting 100,000 of those men from our side, and cut off our troops from resupply for at least two weeks, and now how well do our troops do? Tanks without fuel do not work very well....
War with Iran means we lose, not lose like we are losing in Iraq because we cannot win, but actual military defeat on a massive scale. It will be very bad for our troops taken prisoner that we scorn the Geneva Convention....
