Short stories: For children

Tales of speedy and spike

Speedy and Spike were muscovy ducks, speedy was a beautiful white and grey duck who for the last 38 days had been sitting on eleven eggs, she was excited for today was the day they were due to hatch.

Speedy had had babies before, but never this many, and she just couldn't wait for them to arrive. She sat calmly on her nest, Spike sat and watched almost like he was guarding her, but spike was impatient.

"Are they not here yet" he would say to speedy every 2 minutes.
"Patience Sweetie" said Speedy "You can't rush these things you know" .

After about an hour speedy started to feel movements from under her belly as she lifted up to take a peek she saw that five of the eggs had hatched.
"Wow Spike, take a look, five little ones" she said. Spike leant forward, to look, and the five little ones ran behind their mum.
"Don't be scared my babies" said speedy, "This is your dad"
The little ones very timidly came out from under mums belly, to meet their dad Speedy settled back down with the babies under her. The babies needed to be kept warm and the other 6 eggs needed to hatch,
Another hour passed and speedy took a peek in her nest, and saw 10 babies, but she noticed that the eleventh one was struggling to get out of his egg.
"hello little ones," she said to the 10, "is your little sibling struggling " Speedy leant forward, and whispered to the egg "come on slowcoach push harder" speedy could see a little beak, and a leg, after about ten minutes speedy was getting panicked.

She called for spike, who was down by the river, "spike, Spike, come quick" she shouts " number 11 has got stuck" she calls Spike came waddling up to the nest to take a look, "come on little one" he calls "push harder"
The 10 start to call too, "Come on number 11, push hard"
Number 11 pushed and pushed for all he was worth and after ten minutes of struggling he found himself safe and warm under his mum with the other ten
