Tips for making paper mosaics

by Toya

Making paper mosaics is quite easy. You can choose what type of paper mosaic you want to do. First of all think of what kind of mosaic you want to do. For example a fish, cat, dog, other animals, a portrait, scenery, abstract shapes and patterns, signs with letters or a mixture. Then trace your picture onto some tracing paper and transfer it to some colored or plain card. You can also add lines for each separate part of the picture before you start adding the mosaic pieces. So for example, you can do a sky and draw separate lines for the sky so you could have different blue colored pieces on it. Then if you do a beach or seaside you could add some lines for the sand and do different brown colors for the sand and different lines for different colors of the sea.

Do any size you want but if you've never done a mosaic before you may want to do a small one to begin with. Mosaics look good using different colors. And you can use individual colors for different parts of the picture. Using crepe paper, newspapers, colored pieces of thin card, or magazines pieces can be quite effective. You can cut out some pieces before you start your mosaic first to get you started. Cut a mixture of shapes like squares, triangles, circles, rectangles and some odd shapes. Once you've finished one lot of pieces, cut out another set so you don't have to cut each piece every time you stick one piece onto the picture. It can save a lot of time and effort.

Get some glue, block glue is better than liquid glue as this can ruin the paper. Then begin your project. If you're stuck for ideas take some creative ideas from magazines, trace pictures you find or do a search on the Internet and find patterns you can trace. Do the mosaic slowly and try to do it section by section. Keep checking after you finish each section of the picture to make sure it looks nice and you've added the colors you want.
