The Great Lakes State's tourism slogan "Say YES To Michigan" is wise advice if you're looking for the best skiing in the Midwest. Michigan boasts of more than 40 downhill ski resorts and properties offering award-winning service, grooming value and family activities.
The state is composed of two different peninsulas; Upper and Lower. The peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the world.
At the upper tip of the Lower Peninsula you'll find:
BOYNE: One Boyne Two Mountains
Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands: Don't let the name fool you, Boyne Highlands (which we'll be concentrating on) is every inch a mountain.
The Highlands rated in America's top five for snowmaking, has 44 runs with the longest more than 5,200 ft. and a vertical drop of 545 ft. You'll find Lower Michigan's steepest run here, The Couloir. Other difficult/expert runs include: Payson's Bypass and Rebel Yell as well as a monster 700-ft. superpipe. Night skiing is offered Wed.-Sat. beginning during Christmas
Other activities: Snowsports Academy: Ski and snow-boarding school is offered for the whole family. Ice-skating is just steps away from the slopes or enjoy dog-sledding, an arcade (with pool table), indoor swimming and spa services. (Neighboring Boyne Mountain features Avalanche Bay, a huge water park which you are welcome to visit.)
You can select from many dining options, including the Main Dining Room, cafeteria or lovely North Peak restaurant. If you're looking to kick back and relax, join the fun at "The Zoo" bar, where live bands appear nightly. The Slopeside Lounge offers a lovely view, gorgeous fireplace and a little quieter atmosphere.
Moving on to the Upper Peninsula (or the UP as it is called by locals), we'll take a look at a few resorts
BIG POWDERHORN: A favorite on the UP, 3 peaks, 27 runs, 253 acres of skiable terrain. Try everything from the basic Big Bird to Cannonball Blunder, Vertical Drop (600 ft. with moguls, chutes and drop-offs) and don't miss the new Katie's Catwalk and Dynamite double black diamond runs. (Skiing is free for children under 9, when accompanied by an adult).
Other activities: Ski and Snowboarding School, ice-skating, pool and sauna, ice-fishing, snowmobiling, game room and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
There is a complete village at the base of the mountain which contains restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Enjoy a casual meal at the Alpen Tavern & Grill or dance to a live band or DJ at Black River Lodge's Northern Lights.
