Apples have been long touted as a wondrous fruit. Besides tasty and crunchy, they keep doctors away and teachers happy. Also, almost everybody likes them, and they are readily available.

While it is accepted that apples are nutritious, most people are unaware of their far-reaching healing powers. Some herbalists suggest apples to treat exposure to a nuclear accident. Hopefully, none of us will have to test that theory, but there are other ways we can extend the health benefits of this common fruit. Even if you are an herbal sceptic, please feel free to utilize the following tips. Unless you have an apple allergy, all are safe.

For example, an apple eaten before bedtime purportedly helps insomniacs sleep.

If you enjoy drinking herbal tea, try one made from dried whole apples. It is an excellent diuretic and aids in eliminating toxins from your body, including lead, mercury, and other pollutants. The pectin in apples lowers cholesterol as well, helping reduce the risk of heart disease. Try drinking pure apple juice to cleanse the liver.

Why not use your head? Apples and apple seeds contain phosphorus, which is essential for proper brian functioning. Please note, however, that apple seeds contain cyanide. The small number of seeds in one typical core poses little or no risk, but more than that can cause serious problems. Eat all the apples you want, but limit your seed intake.

Some medical studies have shown pectin helps relieve diarrhea. Peel and grate the apple before eating. Intestinal bacteria transforms it into a soothing, protective coating for irritated intestinal linings.

On the flip side, apples are also good for constipation because they are high in fibre, adding necessary bulk to your diet. This will also cut your odds of getting cancer, as pectin binds certain cancer-causing compounds in the colon, speeding their elimination from the body.

High-fibre diets help to control diabetes, as does the pectin which aids in lowering blood sugar levels. Apples are considered a remedy for the joint pain and stiffness associated with rheumatism.

There are many, many more health uses for the common apple. Some claims seem a little hard to believe, while others just make sense.

Whether you feel confident in the healing powers of apples or not, please do not attempt to treat diabetes, high cholesterol or colon disease solely with herbs. Apples should be used as a complement to professional health care.

Keep enjoying yur Macs, Ida Reds and Delicious apples. It helps ward off the doctor and is a pleasant, easy way to help keep you and your loved ones in good health.
