Anime reviews: Outlaw Star

Space...the vast darkness was always filled with stars. In this anime, however, it's also filled with outlaws, space pirates, and ambiguously gay arms dealers!
Outlaw Star follows the adventures of Gene Starwind, a seemingly shiftless opportunist, and his young partner, Jim Hawking. After having a run in with a mysterious woman named Hilda, they find themselves right in the middle of a space pirate smackdown!

When Gene and Jim meet Hilda, she is being pursued for the unknown contents of a case she is carrying. When the case is opened, a droid called Melfina is inside. Upon following Hilda to Blue Heaven, a neutral planet, they discover that Melfina is the key to a very powerful ship, the XGP1. After a second encounter with the pirates, Hilda meets an untimely end. Gene and Jim are left with Melfina and the new ship, which Gene dubs the Outlaw Star.
And so begins a whirlwind of interesting encounters with space pirates and other unsavory characters. Using the ship, Gene and Jim start their own delivery service to generate income, and take jobs as they become available. As the story unfolds, a tragedy from Gene's past drives him to seek revenge on the notorious crooks, the McDougald Brothers.
The story is enhanced by a colorful cast of characters. Aisha Clan-Clan, a princess of the lethal, catlike Ktarl Ktarl planet, pursues the Hawking-Starwind team relentlessly, but finally joins it when she realizes they are all searching for a place called the Galactic Layline. When Gene requires weapons or parts for the ship, he enlists the services of Fred Lowe, an extremely feminine man who's heavy in his bank account, but "light on his feet." Fred's adolescent crush on Gene is a constant point of contention between them, except when Gene decides to use it to his advantage.
Rounding out the regular cast is Twilight Suzuka, a highly skilled female assasin who is known to be both ruthless and beautiful. When Suzuka is dispatched to kill Fred Lowe, Gene steps in. In exchange for parts for the Outlaw Star, Gene protects Fred by insisting that Suzuka kill them both, or leave Fred alone. Suzuka also joins the team, continuing to hunt bounties as a way of generating income.
So if you enjoy spaceships, firearms, deadly women, and fistfights, tune in to Outlaw Star on DVD.
