How to prevent and reduce the effects of colds

The almost cure for the common cold and other practical remedies.

Having had a cold this week I felt it was the appropriate time to write this article.
My wife had a cold for about 3 days when suddenly last Saturday evening I started to feel the symptoms beginning to appear. My immediate reaction was to begin using Zicam ( Zinc ). I found over the last year and 3 colds, Zicam seemed to reduce both the duration and symptoms. Previous to using this homeopathic remedy my colds generally lasted from 7 to 10 days. Now they last from 3 to 5 days with a dramatic reduction in symptoms. Although there has been some controversy regarding the nasal spray version and possible taste sensory loss I would circumvent this by using the chewable version.

Below you will find additional recommendations for alleviating your symptoms:

1. To relieve the dry throat that often signals the beginning of a cold dissolve 2 tablespoons of salt in 1 quart of water; inhale the solution from a small dish or squirt it into your nose with an eyedropper.

2. Take aspirin or an aspirin substitute for your cold related aches and pains.

3. Avoid exercise as your endurance will be lowered making you much more likely to injure yourself. If you also have a fever exercise can result in heat exhaustion.

4. Rest as much as possible to recharge your immune system. Staying at home will also prevent the spread of germs.

5. Drink plenty of fluids, especially citrus juices as the acid they contain creates a hostile environment for the viruses. Drinking will also help to reduce the mucus.

6. To soothe a sore throat gargle every 2 hours with a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of water.

7. Saltwater nose drops may help relieve a stuffy nose. Boil 1/2 cup water, let it cool, and dissolve 1/4 teaspoon in it.

8. If you use medicated nasal sprays or drops don't use them for more than 3 days as they tend to create a rebound effect.

9. Hot chicken soup will also help to dissolve mucus. A strong cup of peppermint tea can have the same effect. Adding honey to it will additionally help to soothe a sore throat.

10. You should also attempt to vaporize a sore throat and congestion by taking a steamy shower. The shower can open up clogged sinuses and keep a cold from becoming sinusitis.

As far as vitamin C goes there is no firm evidence that it does any more good than eating an orange a day.
