How frustrating to go into your workplace, knowing that the effort you put
forth matters not. It's futile at best. You've spent sleepless nights stressing
over how to handle this professionally, and you're intimidated and left to feel
even more vulnerable in surroundings that your more familiar with than the boss is.
You've been employed there for many years, and in comes a new face, with new
ideas about how to make better decisions based on the degrees he or she is
able to nail to the wall, and all of this stems from the companies desire to
streamline new management into a healthier environment. One that's more conducive
to an atmosphere of harmony and teamwork far more superior than what it replaced.
Change of any kind should be positive, and made with intentions that are based on
what the overall view of the company is. It's all about moving forward in a way
that ignites in employees, a sense of worth, and with that, a balance should be
created, that allows this process to take place without so much as a ripple in the
water.
In comes the new person in charge, all business like, an award winning smile, that
automatically puts you in an uncomfortable position. One of doubt, misguided trust.
All the senses keenly on alert for what's really coming. Body language speaks for
itself. The boss stands there with their arms crossed over themselves, nodding in
agreement, when in fact his folded arms screams "don't" approach me. I'll be the
one that "decides" things. You'll soon learn my ways and intentions. It's so
obvious, and such a disappointment. You're positive attitude, positively walks
away. You're hope of a real change, changed the moment the arms crossed themselves.
After a few weeks, and benefit of the doubt, you're still disappointed. You've been
the chosen one to "speak" to the boss. You agree, and in that moment all doubt is
removed about approachability or not. The boss spoke of having an open door policy,
and even encouraged you to use it, and you're blindsided in an instance. All the
while, you're shocked by the outcome of his own words.
When a boss speaks of being approachable, and goes so far as to encourage how open
the door is, he also needs to remove blinders from his eyes, because an open door
implies an open mind. One will not benefit without the other. It's a two way
street. Employees are not without reason, and to put them in a position of defense,
is not only rude, but in no way benefits their abilities
