Website reviews: LinkedIn.com

I use Linked-In extensively, it is simple to use and seems to be gathering momentum as more people sign up. It is quick and easy to find former colleagues and relatively straightforward to request introductions to other folks. I like the question and answer facility and the jobs section looks comprehensive but I've not used it in anger.

The sheer number of people who are two or three steps removed from you in the network is really surprising, as is the number of contacts you will find if you work back through your CV. Mind you everyone seems to be a director or VP these days so you do wonder who is out there doing the work!

The matching facilities for company names could be a bit more sophisticated but at the end of the day this is a free service for most of us so it is churlish to complain. It also seems to be mercifully free as a source of SPAM e-mails. You can find yourself locked out if more than a couple of people decline an invitation to join your network but it's quite simple to rectify.

Linked-In gets a big thumbs up from me, and it's becoming a valuable tool to build up a professional network. It's that old adage, you get on in business as much due to who you know as to what you know.
