Al Gore awarded Nobel Peace Prize

by Nelumbo

After a crushing loss after a presidential bid in 2000, Al Gore could have faded to obscurity. Instead, he now shares the 2007 Nobel Peace prize for his work to raise awareness about global warming.

He will share the award with the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This international committee of respected scientists across the globe has made three influential reports on the global warming crisis in the last decade, based on peer reviewed and previously published scientific papers. These scientists have donated their time and have received no compensation for their substantial work.

Major conclusions by the committee included:

1)The average global temperature has increased over the 20th century by about 0.6 C
2)Snow and ice cover, especially in the Arctic, have decreased dramatically.
3)This warming is attributable to human activities.

It's easy to nitpick the documentary based on Al Gore's mission to spread the message about global warming, "Inconvenient Truth," but his overall work is monumental and the reward is well deserved. In the past ten years, global climate change has changed from an obscure idea talked about only among academics to a buzz word recognized by almost everyone in America.
