The female as a sexual object in male-oriented cinema

as key protagonists within films; it can be seen increasingly so that women are now becoming key protagonists as well as men. Take Uma Thurman's role within Kill Bill for instance and her lethal sword mastery; although she can still be seen as a sexual object, she is the one that progresses the narrative and is indeed the key protagonist. Whilst she still exudes sexuality, this fact is used fully to her advantage and can be seen as the changing of times in terms of gender specific film conventions and the way in which film narratives are structured.

I feel it can without a doubt be seen in cinema that females are often seen as sexual objects. Cinema can at times be extremely male-oriented and detrimental towards the female form. It can also be seen however that in recent years there has been an emergence of the 'female gaze'. This can be seen in films such as 'The Virgin Suicides' where it is evident towards Josh Hartnett's character of 'Trip Fontaine' and it is something that is becoming more and more apparent with time. It is therefore no longer merely the case that females are objectified but males also. Thus it can not be seen that cinema is entirely male-oriented as males too are objectified in terms of sexual desire in film now and no longer purely females. A greater degree of equality is therefore becoming more apparent in cinema.
