Technologies you need for your small business

Technology is as essential to a business today as products, location and staff. It is easy for small business owners to find themselves overwhelmed by the sea of options available as well as the price tags that accompany many of these items. When the time comes to begin investing in technology it is important to consider what you need now, what will be needed 2 years from now, what the cost will be, and how often it will be used. Below we will examine how these four factors can help you make informed and suitable purchases.

HARDWARE

Technology such as phone systems and computers are a necessity to most businesses. When discussing small business packages with your phone company look for a bundle that can sustain your current business as well as the growth you project for the next 2 years. Learn about the next step up so that you will be prepared if and when you out grow your current package. With the purchase of your computers, look for performance and longevity. Many of the bells and whistles will be unnecessary for small businesses and can save you money by stripping them down.

Large expensive equipment such as copiers, printers and fax machines can put a tremendous dent in the pocket book of a small business. Determine how often these items will be needed to effectively run your business right now and over the next two years. If possible, you may want to consider utilizing businesses such as Kinkos and similar companies where you can use their services as needed. When the time does come to purchase your own equipment, research is essential. Know what your needs are before looking and find equipment that will meet the individual needs of your growing business.

SOFTWARE

A properly designed website is crucial in today's market. Your website is a direct reflection of your company and can attract, or repel, potential clients. Software databases are also important to a growing business. Properly storing and tracking customer information will allow your business to maximize development. Be sure that when the time comes to create and implement your database that you have carefully considered future growth. Re-working a system after years of successful business can be costly and time consuming.

Technology is an ever evolving industry. Almost daily the latest and greatest is presented to the world leaving many people feeling unable to keep up. What small business owners should realize is that the only technology that is important to their business is that which helps to grow their business. With research and careful planning, technology can be a helpful solution to many business needs.
