The basic principles of search engine optimization (SEO)

Break the page into subgroups and use the keywords in headings, subheadings, in bold statements, bulleted lists... anywhere it captures a reader's attention and tells them they are in the right place. Below are a few tips for content optimization:

1. Always place your primary keyword in the content page title that must be created by the HTML H1 tag. If possible the keyword should be the first word of the string.

2. HTML formatting such as headings, bold, ordered lists, onpage anchor links, and organization is very important. For instance, a keyword stated in H1 or H2 headline text or boldface type is taken to be a more primary subject than one merely mentioned in the body text. Include keywords in and around your hyperlinks. In other words, like with emphasized text, if your phrase appears in or near a hyperlink, the search engines may give it a relevancy boost.

3. Use your keyword in the first paragraph of text particularly within the first 25 words.

4. Although not necessarily part of the body copy it is worth mentioning here that it is crucial that your primary keyword be placed in the HTML title tag which creates the browser window title.

3. Link building

Every link to your page is a "vote" for it's quality and authority. Search engines count the votes when they decide which pages possess the highest quality to be included in their search results. To evaluate a page's link popularity the search engines evaluate the quality, quantity, anchor text and topic relevancy. Essentially you are looking for back link partners that are quality sites related to your topic or theme, that contain few other outbound links and have had a sustained presence on the internet.
