The hardest thing about letting go of relationships in this period of your life, is that you most likely think that this is THE ONE. As in love as you may be, or might have been, the reality is that, at that moment in time, it probably wasn't THE ONE. Sure, there are those miracle high-school sweetheart romances that occur, but let's focus on the general public.
When you believe that this is THE ONE, you plan a future together and when the relationship ends, it is most often time the shock and devastation of not having that future, that makes it hard to get over.
When I broke up with my "first love" (at least what I thought love was at that time) I was devastated and was in depression for three months. I had panic attacks, endless crying fits, lost of weight, and other symptoms that went along with heartache. What helped me through wasn't having friends to talk to (although that helped keep my sanity), but rather accepting and realizing that people change. When you are a teenager, that is the time when things in your life change the most. You grow up more as you enter university and take on more responsibilities, and sometimes relationships don't grow with the individual.
Realizing that you will find new relationships that coincide with what you will grow to want in life is something to look forward to, and never believe that you will be alone because it is all about a mindset. You need to accept that sometimes as much as you are attracted to someone, that alone cannot make a relationship last from marriage, through to old-age. Forcing a relationship is many times more damaging than letting go and moving on.
The best way to get over a relationship is to understand what happened, re-evaluate what you are looking for and realize that even minor differences can cause incompatibility in the long run.
Best of luck
