that works best for you... Some do better with very thin, whip-like new growth, others get better results with a more rigid branch.

His next lesson had us learning to "feel" rod movement and practicing on water sources known only to him. Active water pipes work great, so get a friend to let you try your hand on their property where you don't know the pipe locations. They can act as a control by easily verifying your accuracy. It is best to do this without their presence, marking your "hits" for later review. The reason for this is to prevent you subconsciously picking up subtle clues from them as you walk along. It will also be much easier if you seek out a location that is not loaded with sewer, water and other buried utilities, which can be very confusing for a novice dowser.

Once in your target area, position the rod comfortably in your hands and attempt to clear your mind of active thought. Your focus of attention needs to be on the actual physical sensation of the weight and balance of the wood, its light pressure against skin and fingers and the way it moves as you walk or even a light breeze jostles it. Allow time to gain a familiarity with these sensations.

Once you have achieved awareness of the pattern of natural interaction between the rod and your hands, both standing still and moving, you can begin active dowsing. This is a process that is wise to repeat with each dowsing adventure. Changes in rods, weather and terrain all affect rod behavior and only the most experienced dowsers are able to skip this step with impunity.

As we learned to suspend thought and become fully focused on our hands, he began to teach us how to "target" our objective. In this case, water, but I imagine the same technique would work for anything you wanted to find.

He told us, in so many words, to mentally and physically call up water. Remember its scent, movement and feeling against our skin. Feel our thirst, enjoyment in and appreciation of the taste of it on a hot day... Simply put, "experience" water. Don't think about water in words, reach out for it with your physical memory and physical senses. Allow a desire for water to arise in you that is akin to thirst.

While focusing on this sensation, along with maintaining awareness of the branch in your hands, begin to slowly walk about. Do not think about where you are going or intellectualize the search. Instead, allow yourself to drift with your intuition or stroll aimlessly if you don't believe in such things.
