The health benefits of fencing

Originating in the fifteenth century as a way for the nobility of Britain and Europe to practice their swordsmanship safely without risking serious injury as with real fighting, fencing's survival all these years later as a successful and growing sport is lasting testament to its benefits in terms of health and fitness, as well as how much fun it can be.

In terms of health and exercise, fencing is a good aerobic exercise that will develop stronger grip in your hands, correct posture alleviating back pains, and will define and strengthen muscles all over your body. The movements and escapes make it an aerobic as well as anaerobic form of exercise as well. The range of motions that you must use in this sport also improve your reaction times and hand to eye coordination, and having to predict and counter your opponents moves also means that you are constantly thinking and strategising, which can help develop mental strength as well as physical.

The fact that you are competing against someone else one on one, and that it were a real combat situation the loser would be killed also gives the winner in fencing a great sense of achievement as well, often a lot greater than other sports where there the skills you practice aren't potentially deadly. Knowing you have these skills at your disposal will make you more confident in general life as well, making fencing good for character and will development.
