Happy Birthday Helium...

As we help you celebrate We can too participate In the joy that writing brings And the hope of all the things That accompany the many thrills Of applying literary skills So I wish you much success Cause it's me, I must confess Who will benefit as well Through the ads you come to sell

Last week (end of September, 2007) I discovered Helium.com and was joyfully launched into a frenzy of article writing. Who knew that there could be such an outlet for one's passion? Now there are things people do because they have to, because they want to, and because they're compelled to. I fall into the final camp when it comes to writing (both words and music). I was born a writer and will die a writer, so for this reason Helium.com has proved to be an amazing discovery.

This week I discovered that Helium.com is celebrating their first year anniversary of existence, and so the timing couldn't be better for me to thank them for this glorious opportunity they've given me and others wanting to share their thoughts with the world through written words.

Furthermore, (it gets better!) I clicked on to the 'Payments' section of My Helium' and discovered that I can actually get paid for writing, not just in theory, but also in cold hard cash. You can't imagine my joy! Of course the delight was tempered by the sober fact that a week's worth of writing rang in at eight cents. For a total of eight articles that works out to...you guessed it! In principle I was ecstatic, but serendipitously I had learned what my writing is worth. Having grown accustomed to putting an hourly value on my time, I realized it was time to change my paradigm. Applying my basic understanding of economics (which tells me it's all about supply and demand), I ascertained that I needed to work more on the demand side of things.

Still I am quite excited, because my week's pay was greater than what I'd earned to date during my songwriting career (a reflection of my marketing not musical skills I assure you). What's more, I've invested a lot more time and money into my music than into writing, so comparative return on my investment has already given me reason to celebrate.

Some never break out of the struggling or starving artists stage, but then some do, and that's wherein the hope lies...to be good enough to rise to greatness in the eyes of the masses. Perhaps Helium.com will prove to be one of the vehicles that makes this possible. So Happy Birthday Helium...Here's wishing you many more!
