Insomnia is something that I don't take lightly. It has effected my lifestyle, my job, and my social life.
I never really realized I was an insomniac until college. Freshman year I discovered that there were a ton of people who shared my disability. I say disability because that is what it is. If an insomniac could fall asleep at a reasonable hour, at will, or at all for that matter the word disability would not be appropriate. Not being able to control this aspect in ones life forces the person to make decisions and choices around this odd sleeping pattern. For better or for worse people tend to adjust and not let poor sleep get to them.
Insomnia however does give you a lot of free time. Time which you can either spend in bed praying to fall asleep or time in which you can do something productive. I have written many articles and accomplished a lot of house held chores not being able to pass out like the average Joe. As many negatives that there are you do need to recognize the positives and work with them to better your life. It is because of my lack of sleep that I have become such a good video game player. chatroom particapant, avid writer, cook and many other recently discovered talents and hobbies. I have grown accustomed to my on going problem but just because it doesn't bother me does not mean that the rest of America is fine with it. We all have to learn what method of sleep works for us and how we can use it to our advantage.
Since college I have done a lot to manipulate my lifestyle to match my sleeping patterns. The only problem is that sheer exhaustion doesn't always have a pattern. And when I do pass out, how long am I going to be sleeping. Truth is , is it's hard to tell. I have taken the night shift at work and scheduled my college courses for no earlier than noon. I have come up with ideas and temporary solutions to my problem besides drinking or taking a substance to induce sleep. I have found that staying active all day really takes a toll on your body and mind allowing oneself to become mentally and physically exhausted at night. Also, eating tends to tire people out. Some call this "the itus". This is when you eat so much that while you digest you become lethargic and sleepy.
The human brain is still not fully understood. My only fear is the more we figure out about this elusive organ the more of a danger we are to ourselves. With this day in age everyone is being over diagnosed and prescribed all sorts of "fix me" medicines. I have taken various types of sleep aids and besides hallucinations and morning grogginess I wouldn't recommend any of them. They are either too weak and don't get the job done or are too strong and when you wake up you feel like walking death. Besides all of that, who wants to be dependent on a substance.
So the question held is why can't we sleep? Is it hereditary, or is it a result of bad habits? Is it a result of stress? The answer is more complicated than that. And in most cases probably they are probably all part of the problem. Fixing your sleeping issue or sleeping habit is not going to come overnight. No pun intended. I have found that in order to strengthen your sleep schedule and to give the best chances for sleep success you need to stick to your guns for at least two weeks. Two weeks provides ample time for your inner clock to adjust and strengthen. So whatever methods you use, stick to them and as hope will have it success will be around the corner.
