Short stories: Science fiction for young adult readers

before work, seeing as we graduated schools at 14, due to the diminishing work force.

The day generally went as imagined, quiet, and ordinary, that is, until lunch.
I walked into the room with my people, and sat at the usual table. It wasn't long before my brother joined us. Cauldron hadn't joined us yet, she was talking to Yoran, her boyfriend. Figures she had one though, she was so pretty. Her skin was a gorgeous blue, like the sky in the winter, her hair a soft golden, like that of the summers sky. He eyes, a deep green, like the waters of our planet. I envied her looks in silence. After a few minutes she joined us, smiling happily. "How'd it go, Cauldron?" I asked. "Good," she replied, "We're going out next week on Friday"

"Which one?"
"The first."
"Nice."
"I know."

We talked for a while before a noise broke out in the kitchen part of the Mess Hall, shouts of fire. Reactions were typical, finish your luch, and head to the exits. But, the fire spread quickly, and blocked off the doors. There were some shrieks of terror, but many were silent, knowing we'd all get the chance to live through this again, and fix things at that way. The fire engulfed the room as we stood in it, burning us all until we were thoroughly gone, the screams of our agonizing pain vociferated throughout the room.

I sighed as I stared out the window of the shuttle, meeting the early Autumn day before me. The sky was still a usual purple for the season, and many of the leaves were still blue from the past season, not a faint red, as they usually were this time of year. Despite the lovely weather, I knew this first day of school was nothing but ordinary. Maybe this time, I would ask Treyu to lunch with me outside instead...

Maybe my friends would join me.
