Choosing the right clasp for your beaded work can be as challenging as choosing the beads themselves. I am always on the lookout for clasps that are easy to use, yet will incorporate into your design and enhance your project rather than be merely a clasp.
Lever clasps work well with chain. There are several types of lever clasps including the round lever clasp and the more elongated lobster clasp. Lever clasps come in varying sizes also, so be sure to choose a size that works well with your project. I most often use this type of clasp for the back of a necklace since it allows for versatility in the length of the piece.
Toggle clasps come in many unique styles and can range in price from a few pennies to some pretty hefty price tags. You can use them to enhance your piece or as the focal point. A large unique toggle for a front closing necklace is stunning. A simple toggle on a bracelet will enhance the piece and is one of the easiest types to work one-handed. Keep in mind that with a toggle type of clasp, there is no margin for error in length. Measure carefully and leave a little room for play in your item.
I find that I seldom use hook and eye type clasps, however some designers do. I find that they come undone far too easily. Substitute a decorative magnetic clasp for a hook and eye for the same result. Make sure that your magnetic clasp is strong enough to hold the necklace or bracelet you have designed.
Box clasps come in many shapes and sizes these days also. In the past, this type of clasp was typically used for pearls, but now they are used in many different designs. A silver box clasp inlaid with turquoise or mother of pearl can make a stunning addition to a front closing necklace!
Whether you decide to make your clasp the centerpiece of your design or hide it away in the back, choosing the right clasp will make all the difference in your finished product. Happy hunting!
