Private college....I happen to work for the financial aid department of one of the biggest private colleges in the US and let me just say this; I would never go there.
Here are just some of the pitfalls when it comes to private colleges.
1. First and foremost is the COST! Public colleges are so much more affordable than private colleges and when I say that, let's just talk numbers. The college I work for charges upwards up $500 PER CREDIT HOUR. Yes, that's right and when you look at a public college the cost difference is very plain to see. Keep taking out those loans and you too will be in debt for the rest of your life.
2. The academic and financial aid counselors at private colleges couldn't CARE LESS. They get their bonuses when they sign you up and that's about all they care about. I talk to students every day that say "My academic counselor told me I had to take all these classes for my degree and then I discovered that I didn't need them." or how about this one "My financial aid counselor has been on vacation for three weeks now...."
3. Transfer credits are going to go further with public colleges than they will with private colleges. I talked to a student a few weeks ago that was trying to transfer her "private college" credits to a public college and they would not accept any of the credits!
Just something to think about......
