I had always wanted to ride a scooter, but the roads here in the Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida area are congested and dangerous. When I went on vacation in St. Augustine, though, I finally had my chance. Several scooter rental stations exist along the main route in the historic district, so I decided to stop in with my children. It seemed like such a refreshing way to tour the historic city. My oldest son and I presented our driver's licenses, signed the necessary waivers, and were set to make a few practice runs around the parking lot.
The staff was extremely helpful. They went over the scooter's parts and how to turn it on, off, accelerate, and brake. My son and I got on our respective scooters while my younger son and daughter watched us practice. We circled the lot several times until we got the hang of it. My son learned more quickly than I, but doesn't that usually seem to be the case with the younger generation?
Soon it was time to put the youngsters on the back, buckle all our helmets, and scoot off to see the historic city of St. Augustine. City traffic moves slowly and cautiously in downtown St. Augustine. There are several horse and buggies, tourist trams, bicyclists, walkers, and, of course, scooters everywhere. Drivers tend to be cautious and observant, and we felt safe riding our scooters through the city.
We had a magnificent day visiting Fort Matanzas, historic graveyards of the settling French Hugenots, specialty shops, and local restaurants of St. Augustine, Florida on our scooters. I encourage everyone to visit the beautiful city and rent a scooter to see all the sites without experiencing the fatigue that walking would bring on.
