Courting the undead: Assessing the appeal of zombie movies

Of The Dead' proved that zombie films don't always have to be straight up and impressed a mass audience with his Zombie Comedy. This film furthered the appeal of the genre more so than ever before as it combined elements of Romantic Comedy and Zombie thriller in order to make for a fantastically enjoyable, side-splittingly funny film. Whilst it can be seen that many a zombie movie will contain elements of comedy within; 'Shaun Of The Dead' furthered this factor to a whole new level. I feel the great thing about this film was that it was fantastic not only for zombie movie enthusiasts as many famous zombie flicks were referenced within the films duration, but also for those that don't follow zombie cinema as they too can appreciate the films hilariously comedic moments.

The disturbing thing about zombies is that they will never generally talk. Whilst they will groan and mumble, the fact they will never talk makes them entirely separate from the human race and highly distinguishable. This is part of the appeal of the zombie movie I feel as it makes them unnaturally emotionless and a real threatening force as we can not gage their thoughts or feelings and can never know what they will do next

Zombies will choose to attack any living being that they come into contact with, and this is what makes zombie movies so appealing. They need no reason to strike next; they just attack out of instinct and craving for fresh meat, and this makes them all the more disturbing, unpredictable, and excitingly appealing to watch. We never know who will be a zombies next victim and therefore within a zombie movie we never know what might be next, unlike a standard horror film where we generally know the targets and who is likely to be picked off first.

The great thing about zombie movies that sets them apart from other horror films is that they do not merely rely on blood and guts in order to shock and disturb. Blood is generally more of a minor factor within the zombie movie as our key focus is on the zombies themselves and they alone keep us captivated throughout the film. Their eating of raw fresh is sporadically shown, however it is more the disgust of their eating body parts of living human beings than the gore element that keeps us hooked here. Objects used to attack a zombie can often be a cause for amusement as when trying to deter a zombie, it is generally a case of using anything in sight in order to attack whether it be a crowbar, cricket bat or a flaming stretch of wood anything and in fact everything is used against the zombie and this can be greatly entertaining.

I feel that zombie movies will never cease to appeal; it's only natural that there will always be a human fascination with the concept of the dead walking the earth. We want to watch zombie movies as we want to see the consequences of those that are dead freely walking the land. It's something we will perhaps never see happen in our lifetimes, however when we view it in movies we start to consider 'what if'. Zombies live an unenviable life; social contact is unobtainable and the thirst for flesh unstoppable, however the fact of the matter is that zombie movies will always be highly appealing and incredibly enjoyable.
