Where to find free knitting patterns

One of the best ways to get a free knitting pattern is to make on up yourself. This is a lot easier than you would think. Look through all the books and patterns you have for knitting crochet and sewing and pick out the ones that give measurements for all the pieces in the pattern. Then choose your yarn.

Next pick a your favorite pattern stitch and knit a large square in the knit stitch you have chosen using a size of needle which knits up most easily. From this you can work out how many stitches and rows you are knitting to the inch or centimeter. It is easy from there to work out how many rows and stitches you will need for each piece.

For increasing for a sloping edge, work out how many rows you will need and how many stitches for the shorter edge and how many stitches for the longer edge. From that you can work out how many stitches to increase per row to get from one to the other over the number of rows needed. If only a few stitches increase are needed over a large number of rows, then you can work out which rows to increase on. For instance if you are going to need to knit 100 rows and increase by 50 stitches, you will need to increase one stitch on every other row.

You will not only have your own free pattern, you will produce a garment which is totally unique. One that you can be proud of
