Horse Racing Movies
Yes even RACING STRIPES was a good horse movie. There probably has not been a bad one that made it to wide release at the movies. Seabiscut, Dreamer, Phar Lap, Champions all told the same story, different places, different times but with the same issues.
Talent, compromised by injury or circumstances, overcome after hard work and sacrifice.
Seabiscut was the runty horse nobody wanted and became a champion through the hard work of a trainer nobody wanted, a jockey blind in one eye and an owner that made something out of almost nothing.
Sonidor was rescued from the glue factory, the trainer bet the farm a once talented horse could be rehabilitated. After countless hours, days, weeks, the horse repays the favor the farm is saved, the trainer's reputation restored and those of little faith and less resolve wondering where they went wrong.
Phar Lap a disrespected and abused horse is again rehabilitated to provide hope to his trainer and those fans who saw him at the track again beating those blue bloods to whom privilege was a way of life.
Champions chronicled the story of a jockey and horse that both had to rally from adversity. The jockey had cancer and the horse needed to recover from an almost career ending injury to winning the Grand National in England
They have not written a movie about Barbero yet and the disaster of Ruffian made me turn the TV off before her last race but even those stories were good stories.
The coverage of horse racing is a sporting event for sure and there are a lot of issues regarding gambling, drugs, animal safety, jockey safety but there are many stories and for some it is a way of life, a magical way of going.
Melodramas of course, bigger than life stories possibly, but all of these stories were based on fact, biographies of their time within the sport. Even RACING STRIPES a kids movie used the formula.
