Who wants to be reminded that they are getting older? Not me!
When I turned forty I told all my friends and family that I was no longer having Birthdays. It was bad enough to actually be forty I didn't want a bunch of people acting like it was a cause for celebration. Giving me over the hill gag gifts and telling me I have gray hair. I would rather be the center of attention because I actually did something amazing and noteworthy.
To me Birthdays are for little children, teenagers and the elderly. They should make the mild stones in your life. Like when you turn ten and hit the double digits. The all-important thirteenth Birthday when you finally become a teenager. Sixteen when you get to take your drivers test and get your license. Or eighteen when you are considered an adult and you get to vote. These are things that are worth celebrating.
Then there is the elderly. I won't mind having a party when I hit eighty. I will be proud that I made it that far in the journey of life. I will expect lots of presents and cash, but until then I am happy pretending that I don't have birthdays and that I am still 39.
Okay, and I admit that one of the big reasons I don't like celebrating my Birthday anymore is because my family is spread out all other the country and I don't get to spend it with them anymore. My closest sibling is 3 hours away. It just hasn't seemed like a real Birthday without them here to celebrate with me. It makes me sad that they are so far away. I guess I had better let them know that they only have 38 more years to plan there trip to get here for my 80th Birthday. LOL
