Perhaps the problem lies in the fact we call psychic a 'gift'. A gift is given, there is no responsibility to change or enhance it.
The proper term for psychic abilities is talent. When we have a talent for anything (music is a good example - even a popular concert pianist had a teacher to learn the basics before demonstrating his innate talents) it is important to our own personal growth - materially, spiritually, mentally, - to enhance it and develop it to its finest quality.
A doctor has the hands to be a surgeon, he requires a lot of education before laying his hands on his patient. At least, I hope so - I wouldn't want a brain surgeon without the knowledge to back up his skills.
Psychic work then becomes a balance of knowledge and talent. Anyone can be psychic - it is said there is a gland for that purpose - the pineal. It takes a focused interest and learning to enhance it to make a psychic ready to aid other people.
Another thing it takes, that is often not addressed, is a spirituality. Spirituality at its finest is about service. Why would a psychic put their own talents on the line in such a manner to be abused by the uninformed, if they did not have a draw to being spiritually of service?
It is not a requirement, nor even a part of the psychic abilities. It is a personal choice to be of service. Motives move us all in the direction we choose to work. So that when money is on the table, and there is expectation of performance, the spirituality can still be the motive.
No one denies anyone the pay for any other talent they have within their makeup. Why would the psychic be different? To say it is different is to say it is something special to anyone demonstrating. When we all become sensitive to our environment on a deeper level, the psychic will no longer be needed to aid our journey.
And just what are you paying for when you visit a psychic? Is their time and energy worth nothing? While service may be their motive, they have a need to earn to live, just like anyone else. Using the psychic talent as a part of that is what seems to be at question. If it is not special to any one person, then it is a talent to be developed and used.
