Recently I have had the opportunity to take my 3 year old daughter out onto the golf course for the first time. Needless to say it was a great experience and we looking forward to having daughter/dad time every Friday evening.
If you are in the same situation and want to get your children into golf but also know that this game is big into traditions and common courtesy that sometimes children can't understand. Take some advise from below:
1. Call the clubhouse and check to make sure if it is alright to bring the kids out on the course and ask when is typically the day and time of the week when it is slowest. Fortunately at our club, it is Friday nights. So we are able to go out to the course, take our time and have fun.
2. Set your rules prior to getting to the course. We have two rules when we get out to the course, first is that she has to be a good listener and the second is that we have to use our inside voice, even though we are outside. If you set these parameters prior to getting out to the course it is a lot easier to reinforce them.
3. Don't push them. I have times when I play a hole and she won't get out of the cart, because she is busy marking up the scorecard. Then we have other holes when she wants to hit the ball 20 times on the green. Let them learn the world's great game at their own pace.
4. Set a good example. You want to introduce your children to golf, you have to be the spokesperson for the game. You can't throw your clubs or get upset with bad shots. If you smile and realize that this quality time is great for the both of you, then the love for the game will be seen from every angle.
These are the four basis principles that we have taken with us to the golf course and we have a great time and the course is overly gracious with letting us go out on Friday evening's and play at our own pace. Set great examples out on the course and they will be imported into your children's values and morals for life.
